Rare Earth: Critical Minerals in the USA

89 89 people viewed this event.

This research project explores the landscape of critical minerals, as defined by the United States Geological Survey. These 50 minerals are considered to be of special importance to the nation’s economy and security, as their supply has been determined to be vulnerable or at risk. Efforts to address the instability of global critical mineral resources (especially those controlled by China, as most of them are) have led to a speculative mining boom in the United States. The nation’s only rare earth mine, where several of these critical minerals are extracted, has been heavily subsidized by the federal government, and is featured in an overlook at the CLUI.
