Surreal artist Amie Pascal’s solo show at Cambium Gallery opens February 10, 2024 for Astoria Art Walk
In the tradition of women surrealists, artist Amie Pascal brings a queer lens to portraying and challenging representations of the body, blurring lines between reality and imagination while juxtaposing abject body horror with beauty. Pascal intuitively expresses a universal rawness from a queer woman’s disabled embodiment in her new series ‘A Body Apart.’
Pascal’s series ‘A Body Apart’ will be exhibited February 10 – March 4, 2024 at Cambium Gallery (1030 Duane St, Astoria, OR).
In the ‘A Body Apart’ series, Pascal delves into betrayals of the body, in all its bountiful guts and beautiful gore. Assaults come from within and all around—how do the most vulnerable hold it together? How do we survive the ravages of our insides? How do we weather what comes at us from all sides without damage? How do we find connection despite isolation?
This work expresses difficult experiences and challenging themes, reckoning with losses and searching for answers. Within surreal and abstract compositions, Pascal uses vibrant acrylic and gouache colors to contrast morbid and gory imagery, referencing old medical anatomy illustrations, in order to expose what it feels like going through this world in a sick, broken body and queer being. Accompanying songs on a curated playlist provide an opportunity to immerse in each painting.
