Michelle Muldrow: The Winds Began to Shift | Artist Reception: June 17, 4 – 6pm
Koplin Del Rio is pleased to present, “The Winds Began to Shift”, a solo presentation of paintings by Portland-based artist, Michelle Muldrow.
This group of work continues on the artist’s varied and resolute approach to dissecting the American landscape in all its complexity. Muldrow’s own search for personal narrative derived from the experience of growing up on military bases throughout the United States, and an attempt to better understand the experience of “home.” From post-industrial ruin, dead malls & fluorescent-lit consumer landscapes in the prior series’, Muldrow presents here the majestic scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, a delicate and revealing excavation of history, myth, nature and place amidst climate and social crisis.
Working in casein paint on clay panels, Muldrow draws, scratches and paints through layers of memory, from her childhood to the Pacific Northwest, which she currently calls “home”. Through this lens, perceptions of place, and the experience of identity in relation to the environment, Muldrow’s landscapes reveal culture, ideology and politics as well as social and environmental concerns and challenges.
