In The Frail is a series of ‘constructed poems’ built from one text (Persons & Places, George Santayana). Initiated a decade ago, this project gained momentum in 2020 to attend to pervasive unknowns that became unignorably acute while sheltering in place. Confined by a palette of existing words, the verses reveal glimpses into the subconscious at waypoints in time. They catalogue experiential milestones, wrestle with notions of inside vs. outside, productivity, captivity, creativity, & “otherness”. They convey anxiety, unsettledness, & prostration borne of idle time in a world on pause. These cantos also offer slivers of hope & resiliency; reminders that progress is not linear, & avowal that revolution can begin with a whisper.

Erinn Kathryn is an interdisciplinary artist who works in sculpture, mixed media, painting, and installation. Notable solo/ feature exhibitions include: Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland, OR 2012), Alaska House Art Gallery (Fairbanks, AK, 2013), Multnomah Arts Center (Portland, OR 2014), Bison Gallery @ Oregon College of Art and Craft (Portland, OR, 2016), and Portland Community College. Since 2011, Erinn has participated in various nationally recognized artist residencies in Alaska, Vermont, Oregon, Washington, and the American Southwest. She has been awarded numerous grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC, Portland, OR) for her sculpture/installation projects, including an honorarium for a site-specific installation in 2015. Erinn’s work is part of the permanent collections of Portland Metro, the Zymoglyphic Museum, the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and the Museum of the North, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her constructed poetry has bee featured in Subjectiv Journal, Common Ground: Annual Women’s and Non-Binary Zine from Borderline Press. Erinn Kathryn studied printmaking, dance, and psychology at Penn State University and received her M.A.T. from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
Sending scouts deep into the Portland, Oregon literature and arts scene, Buckman brings together the cities sharpest and presents them to the greater world. Delivered with grit and cunning visuals, the printed medium is very much alive in Buckman.
