PPSTMM is thrilled to share with Portland a group of new paintings and poems from the multidisciplinary artist cat ross. Join us on FridayMay 16th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm for an opening reception.

fathoms gathers two of cat ross’s many creative paths. As in all of them, an awareness gives way to a somatic perception, bringing feelings. Honing into one of these sentiments provokes the start of the painting and nearly simultaneously priming the written language. The resulting  paintings and poems are paired, echoing one and other, suggesting the prospect of context, like the warm air clearing the windshield, and yet sometimes that breeze thickens the fog before relenting.
cat tells us that these works began while she was making David Hockney studies from his pool series of the 60’s and 70’s. The interest being two fold, the paint and way Hockney spoke of the works as dealing with interpersonal relationships. The paint aspect connects to ross’s own attraction to water, which had deepened over the years during a series of residencies and projects with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Outings with NOAA exposed her to the realities of our warming and toxic waterways that dwindle populations of species, and propagate algal blooms.

fathoms as a tool to measure and discern all rolled into one, or in this case a pair.
