A Distant Center

242 242 people viewed this event.

The upcoming exhibition at Artspace, A Distant Center, brings together more than thirty artists, delving into the concept of a center. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Friday, September 6, between 5–7 p.m. The exhibition will be on view until October 25, 2024.

Esteemed art historian, curator, and critic, Sue Taylor, Ph.D., juried this open-call exhibition in collaboration with Artspace Curator and Program
Manager, Morgan Ritter. Taylor is a longtime corresponding editor from Portland for Art in America and professor emerita of art history at Portland State University. Her catalog essays, articles, and art reviews have been published by American Art, American Craft, Art Journal, Art in America, Art News, ArtUS, Chicago Sun-Times, Dialogue, Fiberarts, New Art Examiner, Oregon ArtsWatch, and the Oregonian.

The show’s core underpinning, a ‘center,’ can be understood as a point where attention is focused, gathering occurs, and energy flows outward; it is also known as the axis, core, or spine. Ritter shared the show’s title, A Distant Center, is sourced from poet Ha Jin’s poem, A Center, and suggests a momentary sense of stability and resilience in a less-than-unified socio-political landscape.

Exhibiting artists include Anne Mavor, Antjuan LaShawn, Ash R Smith, Beth Yazhari, Christa Nye, Claire Browne, Connie Moore, Diane Jacobs, Erin Boberg Doughton, Ingrid Dohm, Jenna Philpott, Jennifer Viviano, John H McComish, Julie Johnson, Justin Jude Carroll, Kate Ampersand, Kyung Yeon Park, Laura Paulini, Leslie Cheney-Parr, Lindsay Boyer, Marlana Stoddard Hayes, Mikalah Ball, Nancy Matanic, Pamela Fedderson, Robert Procter, Robert Sumner, Rose West, Ruth Meijer, Sarah Bouwsma, Sheila DeLaquil, Susan Jones, Susan Waddington, Wayne C Harrel, and Zhang Mao.

Artspace is a nonprofit art gallery located at 380 A Avenue in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibition, please visit artscouncillo.org.
