Meet Jaelynn Walls: Variable West’s 2022 Editorial Apprentice

Jaelynn is standing in front of a Yucca tree and a thinly framed Jeffrey Cheung print. She is a woman in her early twenties with dark skin tone, short, curly, dark brown hair. She's smiling subtly at the camera.

The Variable West team is absolutely delighted to introduce Jaelynn Walls as our 2022 Editorial Apprentice.

Jaelynn Walls is a curator and culture writer based in San Francisco, California. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in art history at Stanford University and is the creator and host of Art in Color, an educational Youtube channel. Her interests include digital arts education, contemporary African American art, and winding experimental fiction.

This project is supported by Critical Minded, an initiative dedicated to building the resources and viability of cultural critics across the United States. Thanks to a generous grant, we expanded our Editorial Apprenticeship program to hire a new apprentice in 2022.

Over the next ten-months, Jaelynn will work with VW Founder Amelia Rina to learn how an online magazine works while expanding her art writing practice. In addition to assisting with daily tasks such as website and social media management, apprentices receive reading and writing assignments, participate in discussions, and will take ownership of Variable West’s Love Letters column.
