Am Johal is Director of Simon Fraser University’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement and holds degrees from the University of British Columbia, Royal Roads University, Institute for Social and European Studies (MA), and the European Graduate School (PhD). He has served on the Vancouver City Planning Commission, on the boards of numerous organizations including the Or Gallery, Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House, Vancity Community Foundation, Impact on Communities Coalition, and is an Associate with SFU’s Centre for Dialogue and SFU’s Institute for the Humanities. He has previously worked on the Vancouver Agreement with the provincial government and has been an advisor to two BC cabinet ministers. In 1998, he co-founded UBC’s Humanities 101 program based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. He is the author of Ecological Metapolitics: Badiou and the Anthropocene (2015, Atropos Press) and co-author with Matt Hern of Global Warming and the Sweetness of Life: A Tar Sands Tale (2018, The MIT Press).
