PLAY†PREY: A Gospel

October 9 - December 4

Free
Superimposed over the inside crease of a book, the words "play" and "prey" are separated by a crucifix against the outline of a church window.

Minnesota Street Project Foundation is honored to present PLAY†PREY: ‘A Gospel,’ a multi-channel film experience by Leila Weefur (@spikeleila) at the Minnesota Street Project (@minnesotastreetproject). Weefur’s exhibition is the third of five supported by the California Black Voices Project. On view in Gallery 106 at 1275 Minnesota Street Project through December 4, 2021.

Presented as three separate films playing simultaneously, PLAY†PREY: ‘A Gospel’ recounts a relationship between God, the Church, and a queer Black child. The spiritual narrative takes inspiration from four lyrical sermons in James Weldon Johnson’s ‘God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse.’ The film features an original soundtrack in collaboration with KYN (Josh Casey & Yari Bundy) and Vocals from Sandra Lawson-Ndu.

PLAY†PREY: ‘A Gospel’ will run in conjunction with PLAY†PREY: ‘The Old Testament,’ a single-channel installation presented by Telematic Media Arts (@tttelematiccc), opening October 9, 2021. An overture to the story of queer Biblical reclamation, PLAY†PREY: ‘The Old Testament’ is a deconstruction of traditional Christianity, reckoning with colonial biblical history.
