Melody Owen: Are you animal – vegetable – or mineral?
July 2 - August 1Free
New artworks from Melody Owen’s collage series, Are you animal – vegetable – or mineral? will be presented in our backroom gallery. In these intimate works, Owens considers how we, as humans, differentiate ourselves from the rest of the natural world. Using the medium of collage to create fantastical human forms physically synthesized with shells, flowers, crystals, and animals, the artist constructs a visual allegory representing the desire for earthly connection.
Melody Owen is a graduate of the MFA program at Alfred University (Alfred, NY) and a current Ph.D. candidate at the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia). She is a multi-disciplinary artist whose drawings, collages, photographs and films address ecological concerns. Her work has exhibited at such locations as the Kunsthalle Krems Museum, (Krems an der Donau, Austria), the Royal College of Art (London, England), Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN), Spoonbill and Sugartown (Brooklyn, NY), Bellevue Art Museum (Bellevue, WA), The Art Gym at Marylhurst University (Marylhurst, OR) and the Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR). Owen has completed residencies at the AIR Niederösterreich Residency, (Krems, Austria) Djerassi Residency (Woodside, CA), Playa Cité Internationale des Arts, (Paris, France), the Gil Society (Akureyri, Iceland) and the Est-Nord-Est Residency (Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Canada). In addition, to winning numerous awards, grants and fellowships, Owen’s exhibition, Under My Skin, was an Artforum Critic’s Pick in 2015.
