Jessica Cadkin: Rupture & Rapture
September 10 - October 16Free
“Blossoms rupture and rapture the air”
This is a line from “And I Was Alive” by Osip Mandelstam, a poem written in 1937 and translated from the Russian by Christian Wiman.
The beauty of nature is both fierce and fragile: the destructive power of a tornado wrapped in the delicacy of flower petals. To create her installation Rupture & Rapture, Jessica Cadkin used hundreds of petals, deconstructed from silk flowers and hand-sewn together to form the piece’s shape. It rises approximately
twelve feet from the floor toward the ceiling where the petals fan out; the petals flutter by the wind of a fan
inside it as though by a gentle breeze.
Jessica Cadkin was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in Napa, California. She received a BA in Sculpture
and Painting from San Francisco State University. Her work has appeared in group shows internationally and
throughout Northern California including Headlands Center for the Arts, Southern Exposure, di Rosa Preserve, Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature, Bedford Gallery, Root Division, and the Berkeley Art Center. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2020.
